Buffer zone in ginger production:

To grow organic ginger, a buffer zone of 25 to 50 feet should be left around the conventional farm, depending on the location of the estate. Products in this buffer zone belt should not be treated as organic. As an annual crop, the required conversion period will be two years.

In preparing the land, minimum tillage operations can be adopted. Beds can be prepared 15 cm high, 1 m wide and of a suitable length to provide a space of at least 50 cm between the beds. The solarization of the beds is beneficial to control the multiplication of pests and pathogenic organisms. Solarization is a technique by which moist field beds are completely covered with polyethylene sheets and exposed to the sun for a period of 20 to 30 days. Polyethylene sheets used for soil solarization must be safely stored after work is complete

The process of growing organic ginger in containers

Ginger is a great eater and an even bigger drinker that needs a lot of room to grow. Given the space, a piece the size of your thumb will easily grow to fill a 2-gallon pot in about 6 months. Choose a nice container with good drainage holes and a deep saucer.

Use fertile, well-drained soil with plenty of coconut fiber. Carefully place the presprouted rhizome in 4 inches of soil and bury all but the tips of the shoots. Then, soak the ginger root in water overnight, before planting. Fill the container with commercial potting soil with compost and place the ginger root in the soil with the eye button pointing up. Cover it with 1 to 2 inches of soil. Water the ginger plant with a water can, water thoroughly until the soil is completely moist to the bottom. Place the container in a location that receives morning sun and full shade during the day.
